James Shelby “J.S.” Barrett of Corbin, Kentucky, former resident of Leslie County, was born February 19, 1938 in Essie, Kentucky to the union of the late Chester and Chelsea Collett Barrett. J.S. was of the Baptist faith and by occupation he was a retired welder, employed by American Hoist. J.S. was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the guitar. He was an avid bluegrass music fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He passed away Monday, December 09, 2019 at the Christian Healthcare Center in Corbin, Kentucky. He was 81 years old.
In addition to his parents, J.S. was preceded in death by, two sons, Carlos Wayne Barrett and Leonard Ray Barrett, four brothers, McKinley, Paul, Alger and Elmer. Also, two sisters, Hazel Collett and Goldie Hensley, infant siblings, Virgie and Wendall.
James Shelby “J.S.” Barrett leaves behind, his loving wife, Ethel Barrett of Williamsburg, KY, one son, Sonny James Barrett & wife, Janenne of Eubank, KY and a step daughter whom he raised, Cassie Caldwell. Other survivors include, three brothers, Caleb Barrett of Essie, KY, Chester “Junior” Barrett, Jr. & wife, Bonnie of Stinnett, KY, and Lynn Barrett & wife, Wilma of Stinnett, KY. Eight grandchildren, Blaine A. Barrett, Virginia L. Barrett Crowe & husband, Michael, J. Samuel Barrett, Andrew Barrett, Stephen J. Barrett, Dustin C. Barrett, Marty Maddox and Brandi Maddox; great-grandchildren, Riley C. Barrett, Sawyer James Barrett, Jessie James Barrett, Amilla Warren, Haven Barrett, Samuel Barrett, Luca Barrett, Sarah Crowe, Gmma Crowe, Haylee Crowe, and Brandon Crowe. A host of other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. – Thursday in the chapel of Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home with James Bowling, Jr., and Taylor Adams officiating. Interment will follow in the Collett Cemetery at Essie, KY. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour of Thursday at the funeral home chapel.
