Joe Shepherd

August 5, 1932 ~ April 8, 2018 (age 85)

Funeral: 2:00 P.M. – Wednesday at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home chapel

with his grandson, Jonathon Shepherd and grandson-in-law, Trent Pool officiating.

Interment:  Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery – Smilax, KY

Visitation: 5:00 – 9:00 P.M. – Tuesday at the funeral home.


Mr. Joe Shepherd was born August 05, 1932 in Leslie County, Kentucky to the union of the late Wilson & Mary Lewis Shepherd.  He departed this walk of life on Sunday April 08, 2018 at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.  He was 85 years old.  Joe was “Papaw” and “Uncle Joe” to many.  He made it his life’s mission to share Jesus and show his love by making everyone he encountered better.  His passion was going to church, working in his garden, and most importantly, spending time with his family.  By occupation, Joe was a retired from Blue Diamond Coal Company as a coal miner.  He was a member of the Cutshin Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Maggie Witt Shepherd; two brothers, Andy and Otis Shepherd;  one sister, Bessie Day;  two nephews, Billy Joe Engle and Arlon Carpenter;  one niece, Belinda Shepherd; great-nephew, Marty Pennington; brothers-in-law, Arnold Day, Ernest Day, and Tommy Miller.

Joe leaves behind, a beloved son, Marcus Shepherd & wife, Maxine of Smilax, KY;  two cherished grandchildren, Misty Pool & husband, Trent of London, KY, and Jonathon Shepherd & wife, Christy of Smilax, KY;  three very treasured great-grandchildren, Caleb Shepherd, Emily Pool, and Trenton Pool;  two brothers, Jimmy Shepherd & wife, Carolyn of Smilax, KY, and Clayton Shepherd & wife, Edna of Lancaster, KY;  three sisters, Ida May Day, Lorraine Miller, and Manerva Hicks, all of Lancaster, KY; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends also survive.
