Jack Maggard

Mr. Jack Samuel Maggard, age 82 of Hyden, Kentucky, departed this walk of life on Wednesday, November 05, 2014 at his residence. Jack was born July 09, 1932 in Hyden, Kentucky to the union of the late Claude and Evelyn "Abby" Morgan Maggard. He attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (History, Political Science, and Secondary Education). After graduating, Jack came back to Leslie County and worked as a high school teacher. In 1955, he was drafted and served honorably in the United States Army. In service, he became a specialist in International Morse Code, having received FBI Clearance for coding and decoding military communications. After serving in the service, Jack returned to Leslie County to teach and coach basketball. Jack was united in marriage to his loving and devoted wife, Eva Dean Caldwell on December 24, 1958. In 1960, he became one of the assistants in the Superintendent's office, remaining there until 1974. In 1969, Jack authored "Mary Breckinridge: A Tribute". This book was to commemorate the initiation of the Mary Breckinridge Festival, and founder of the Frontier Nursing Service. Jack was regarded as reliable and dependable. After his career in education, he entered business and assumed the increasing responsibilities in coal companies, a trucking company, and a mercantile business, all of which he was the principal owner. In the early 1980's, as an independent broker under contract he coordinated the acquisition of an eight county oil and gas project which set a Kentucky Record in terms of numbers of leases completed, number of parcels and total acreage acquired under a time frame of less than two years. Jack was a consultant in state and local politics. He was elected four executive terms as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Leslie County Democratic Party, initially as the youngest chairman in Kentucky. He was listed in the Who's Who's in American Politics. Jack established the Maggard Logging Company in 1981, and the Leslie Hardwoods Saw Mill in 1999. Jack served as the Leslie County Solid Waste Coordinator and was instrumental in the development of the Leslie County 911 Service and the Leslie County Solid Waste program. Jack had many enjoyable hobbies, which included: hunting, reading, gardening, science, nature, history, politics, humor, poetry, art, and writing. His favorite sport was basketball. His greatest spent time was with his family and grandchildren.

Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by: brothers: Charlie Maggard (Jean), James Maggard, and Bige Maggard; sisters: Imogene Currens (Adrian), and Martha Lou Maggard; daughter-in-law: Tabitha Maggard; nephew: Charles Adrian Currens; nieces: Peggy Jean Maggard, and Dee Maggard.

Jack leaves surviving: his loving and devoted wife, Eva Dean Maggard of Hyden, KY; six sons: Roderick Claude Maggard (April) of Hyden, KY, Bige Colin Maggard (Casey) of Hyden, KY, Jack Samuel Maggard II (Marsha) of London, KY, Kevin Scott Maggard of Hyden, KY, Kendall Dain Maggard of Hyden, KY, and Patrick Dean Maggard (Sabrina) of London, KY; one daughter, (his favorite daughter): Michelle Maggard Cronin (Christopher) of Tampa, FL; one sister: Bettye Lester Maggard Hensley (Paul H.) of Philadelphia, PA; 24 beloved grandchildren: Blaine, Seth, Brad, Chad, Casey, Jesalyn, Chelsey, Justin, Jack Samuel III, Maya, Eva, Austin, Kaylee, Brady, Karlee, Joseph, Landen, Chloe, Austin, Andrew, Shayleigh, Dalton, Hunner, and Kutter; one great-grandchild: Sophie; Daughters-in-law: Rhonda Collett Morgan and Marlene Couch Bailey. special nieces and nephews: Evelyn Carol Yonker, Evelyn Ruth Ahlgard, Carolyn Sue Bargo, Martha Lou Roberts, Lisa Kaye Spangler, Linda Ruth Hooker, James Charles Maggard, Rebecca Lynn Connery, Harvey Hyden Hensley, Ramona Mariani, Tinsley Maggard, Timothy Dale Maggard, James Jeffery Maggard, and James Peyton Bowling; special first cousins: Ralph Lewis, Freda Wells, Phillip Morgan, Lucille Roberts, and Imogene Morgan. A host of other cherished family and friends also survive.

Visitation: 5:00 - 9:00 P.M. Saturday at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home

Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. - Sunday at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Wolfe & Mark Huff officiating.
