John Floyd Gilbert, age 58 of Hyden, Kentucky, departed this walk of life on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center in Hazard, Kentucky. John was born October 19, 1946 in Rochester, NY to the union of the late Leslie Clark Gilbert and the late Caroline Tighe Gilbert. John was a United States Veteran, having proudly served in the United States Navy. John was a successful singer and song writer. A song John had written, "Dixie Dreamin" hit the billboard charts at # 11 in 1983. He was a song writer for the group, Atlanta. He enjoyed writing music, playing guitar, and singing. John was a member of the Essie Christian Missionary Alliance at Essie, KY. John is preceded in death by his parents. John is survived by, his loving companion: Helen Morgan of Hyden, KY; two sons: Joel Gilbert (Tracy) of Albion, NY, and Johnathan Gilbert (Tracie) of Ware Shole, SC; three daughters: Holly Hapeman (Tom) of Albion, NY, Maribeth Jordan of Bay Minette, AL, and Caroline McCall (Josh) of Smyrna, TN; three sisters: Gloria Dix of Albion, NY, Joan Gilbert of FL, and Shirley Bruski of Albion, NY; nine beloved grandchildren: Joel, Matthew (Jamie), Zachary, Hillary, Hannah, Isabella, Trey, Draydon, and Donte; two great- grandchildren: Peyton and Hadley; three girls whom were very special to him, DeDe, Megan and Sydney. a host of other cherished relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 13, 2014 from the chapel of the Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home with Todd Billingsley, Sam Baer, Roger Wolfe and Brian Overbee officiating. Burial will follow the services at the Garrison Cemetery at Stinnett, KY. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M., Friday, September 12, 2014 at the funeral home chapel.
