Josephine Day

Hyden, Kentucky

Josephine Day was born October 15, 1934 in Hyden, Kentucky to the union of the late Dave and Alice Morgan Day.

Josephine had been a life-long resident of Leslie County.  Josephine began teaching at the age of 17 in 1951. She was a graduate of Leslie County High School. Josephine received her bachelor’s degree from Union College and 5th year from Eastern Kentucky University. She taught 32 years at Hyden Elementary School with 31 of those years in the 2nd grade classroom. After teaching school all day, she worked at Giovanni’s making pizzas for a few years. She enjoyed working there and interacting with the customers. Josephine was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Hyden Baptist Church for over 60 years.

Josephine loved working puzzles and word searches. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. Her favorite color was purple. Josephine loved all things Elvis Presley. She enjoyed sports, especially UK basketball. She loved watching game shows, reading, and studying Bible lessons and devotionals. Josephine also collected numerous items. She especially loved chickens. Above all, Josephine cherished the time spent with her daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She babysat all 4 of her great grandchildren before they started school. Josephine loved with all of her heart. If she was for you, she was your strongest advocate. Family and friends lovingly referred to Josephine as “Granny.” Josephine enjoyed traveling, especially after she retired. She loved taking the RV to visit out west or to the beach. She enjoyed visiting family in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. She weathered Hurricane Hugo and loved storytelling about her adventures. Josephine loved taking a little fishing boat on the ocean with family to catch crab and shrimp. She enjoyed fishing at the ocean, lakes, and pay lakes.  She enjoyed weekend drives and thrifting.

Josephine departed this walk of life and went to her heavenly home on April 21,  2023, at ARH in Hazard, KY at the age of 88.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Alice Day.

Josephine is survived by her beloved daughter, Debbie Farler of Hyden, KY. Josephine had two grandchildren, Romellia Gayle Sturgis (Jimmy Sturgis) and Thomas Dale Farler (Crystal Farler). She had four great grandchildren: Nick Baker, Noah Baker, Kennedy Farler, and Madisyn Farler.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home with Roger Wolfe officiating.

Interment will follow in the Morgan Cemetery in Short Creek of Hyden, KY.

The family of Josephine Day will receive friends for visitation from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home.

Arrangements are being handled carefully under the direction of Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home
