David L. Dougherty

Smilax, Kentucky

David L. Dougherty was born, February 25, 1951 in Acworth, GA, a son of the late Alvin and Hazel Garner Dougherty.  He was united in marriage to Charleen Wells on November 26, 1974 in Clintwood, VA.  He was of the Catholic faith and by occupation, he was a computer programmer, retired from Shell Oil Company.  He was a well known and talented musician.  He played old-time music, some of his talents included playing the banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bag pipes and harp.  He played professionally for the Stoneman Family and had toured with James and Bill Monroe.  Lastly, he was a proud member and co-founder of the band, “Troth Sloppers”.  He had an interest in astrology and enjoyed weaving and making handmade books.  David departed this walk of life on Monday, November 02, 2020 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.  He was 69 years old and residing at Smilax, KY at the time of his passing.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Dougherty, a brother-in-law, Jerry Wells, and his Father-in-law & Mother-in-law, Odell and Millie Caudill Wells.

David leaves behind, his loving and devoted wife, Charleen Wells Dougherty of Smilax, KY; a son, Shawn Webb of Smilax, KY, one brother, Allan Dougherty of Florida and Deborah L. Dougherty of Acworth, GA.  Other survivors include, his brothers-in-law, Kenneth Wells & wife, Marlene, and Gary Wells, both of Smilax, KY; his sisters-in-law, Betty Webb, Laurena Duff, and Irene Fugate & husband, David, all of Smilax, KY.  His nieces and nephews, Ronda Sizemore & Jimmy, Jason Duff, Angelica Stacey & Josh, Jerrica Sizemore & Jon, and Sanchari Fugate.

Funeral services will be held at 1p.m. – Friday at Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Damron officiating.  Interment will follow in the Odell Wells Cemetery at Smilax, Kentucky.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 6-9 p.m. – Thursday evening at the funeral home chapel.

Arrangements are being handled carefully under the direction of Wolfe & Sons Funeral Home.
